Carl Winfield Clark Sr., 87, of the 2600 block of Mapleton Ave., a retired
pullman porter, died Oct. 21, 1994, in Sentara Norfolk General Hospital.
Mr. Clark was born in Bayboro, N.C. He had retired from R.R. Pullman Co.
after 17 years. He had been retired for 22 years. He had also retired from
the American Window Co. and had worked there from 1960-1972. He was a
member of New Bethlehem Church of Christ Disciples, Norfolk. He was
chairman of Board of Deacons, Chairman of Board of Trustees and
superintendent of the Sunday School. He was presiding master Ideal Large
and was a member of Eureka Lodge, Masonic Lodge Exceisor 87 and president
of Broad Creek Civic League. He was a member of the Norfolk Planning
Commission, Norfolk Commissions on Aging, Norfolk Clean Community System
and supervisor and manager of Neighborhood Facility Bureau.
He was a member with the Norfolk Police Community Relations and was
president of sleeping car porters. He was honored by the Tidewater
Transportation District Commissions, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc. in
recognition of outstanding community service, the Inter-City Federation
of Civic Leagues in appreciation for his devoted and invaluable service
and the Huntersville Senior Club in recognition of active participation.
He diligently worked with city planners to utilize Liberty Park Property
for Norfolk State University expansion and for the construction of upscale
homes.
He was predeceased by his parents, Elizabeth Wood Clark and Nelson Clark.
Survivors include his wife, Vashti Johnson Clark of Norfolk; three sons,
Carl Winfield Clark Jr. of Norfolk, Bishop Melvin E. Clark of Aliquippa,
Pa., and Wallace A. Clark Sr. of Atlanta, Ga.; 11 grandchildren, Melvin E.
Clark Jr. and Sherris Clark, both of Washington, D.C., David L. Clark and
Vashti V. Clark, both of Monaca, Pa., Amanda Clark and Tabia Clark, both
of Norfolk, Kenneth M. Clark of Philadelphia, Pa., Wallace Clark Jr. of
New York, Sheryl Clark Rodgers of Atlanta, Ga. and Connie Williams of
North Carolina and Erica Clark of Maryland; six great-grandchildren, Carl
Rodgers and Shenell Rodgers, both of Atlanta, Ga., Melvin Clark III and
Michael Clark, both of Pittsburgh, Pa., Melessie Clark of Philadelphia, Pa.
and Johnathan Clark of Alexandria.
The funeral will be conducted at noon Tuesday in New Hope Church of God in
Christ, 3232 Brest Ave., Norfolk, by Bishop Melvin E. Clark Sr.
Burial will be in Roosevelt Memorial Park. Hale Funeral Home is handling
arrangements. A wake will be held from 7 to 8 p.m. today. The body will be
placed in the church at 10 a.m.
