Obituary of Claretta M. Alexander ~ 2001

Claretta M. Alexander, 82, of the 900 block of Tifton St., died March 2, 
2001, at Tandem Health Care.  ''Clara,'' a widow, was born in Pamlico 
County to the late Julia Ann Mann and Hezekiah Mann. She retired in 1953 
as a machine operator for Norfolk Tobacco Co. after 10 years and in 1962 
after six years in food service with Norfolk Public Service. Mrs. Alexander
was a faithful and dedicated member of Union United Church of Christ for 
more than 50 years and attended regularly until her health no longer 
permitted her to do so. She was a loving and devoted mother, grandmother, 
and great-grandmother; to know her was to love her.  Survivors include her 
son, Joseph S. Eure, Jr.; two sisters, Lenora Merritt of Oriental, N.C., 
and Mary E. Amey of Philadelphia, Pa.; four grandchildren; seven 
great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and a host of other 
relatives and friends.  A funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at 
Union United Church of Christ, 877 Goff St., Norfolk, by the Rev. Joseph 
M. Copeland. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery. Viewing will be from 3 to 
6 p.m. Friday at Hale Funeral Home.
