Obituary of Daisy Mason Banks ~ 2004

RALEIGH - Daisy Mason Banks, of 2730 Anderson Drive, Raleigh, died on 22 
November 2004. She was born on 7 March 1907, the daughter of Derwood W. 
and Cassandra H. Mason of Atlantic, North Carolina. She was the widow of 
the late Veston Colbourne Banks, a former member of the North Carolina 
House of Representatives. Educated at East Carolina University and Barton 
College, she was a teacher for 44 years in the public schools of Carteret, 
Craven, Pamlico and Wake Counties. After moving to Raleigh in 1942, she 
taught at Needham Broughton High School and Daniels Junior High until her 
retirement in 1971. Admired by her students, she was often visited by 
former pupils who thanked her for her positive influence on their lives.  
Mrs. Banks was a charter member and past matron of the Order of the Eastern
Star in Pamlico County, and for many years, was an active member of the 
Caswell-Nash Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution, the Daughters 
of the War of 1812, and the Delta Kappa Gamma Society for outstanding 
educators. After her retirement, she served for many years as a docent at 
the North Carolina Museum of History. She was a member of Edenton Street 
United Methodist Church, where she was an honorary Steward, and for many 
years, was a member of the Betsy Peele Bible Class and various church 
circles.  
Surviving are her son, Myron C. Banks and wife, Nancy of Raleigh; 
grandchildren, Caroline Banks Whitley and husband, Neal of Raleigh, Steven 
Banks and wife, Margaret of Greer, SC and David Banks and wife, Elizabeth 
of Tallahassee, FL.; great-grandchildren are Mason, McRae, and Colbourne 
Whitley, Maggie and Andrew Banks, and John Dalton, Carter and William 
Banks. Also surviving are several cousins, including Esther Fulcher, Erah 
Harris and Joseph Mason of Atlantic, sister-in-law Lillie L. Banks of 
Grantsboro, nieces Mary Elizabeth Brinson, Gloria Barrington, Sarah Harris,
Jeannette Hudson, and Rosalie Peacock and nephew Myron M. Banks, Jr. all of
New Bern and Pamlico County.  
The funeral service will be conducted at Edenton Street United Methodist 
Church in Raleigh at 2 p.m. on Friday 26 November 2004. The family will 
receive friends in the Church parlor following the service. Interment will 
be 11 a.m. Saturday in the Community Cemetery in Grantsboro, NC.  
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Edenton 
Street United Methodist Church, 228 W. Edenton Street, Raleigh, NC 27603, 
or to the Core Sound Waterfowl Museum, PO Box 556, Harkers Island, NC 28531.
