PAMLICO COUNTY PAYS TRIBUTE TO LOCAL VETERANS - The Pamlico County Veterans
Council will pay tribute to deceased veterans during a brief memorial 
ceremony at 10 a.m. Saturday, July 9, at the flagpole in front of the 
courthouse in Bayboro. 
This month’s ceremony will be in honor of Daniel Carmen, a veteran of World
War II who served in the Navy. 
Daniel Carmen was born March 12, 1929, in Bayboro, and was one of five 
children born to Alfred and Martha Williams Carmen. He grew up in the 
Bayboro community and attended the Pamlico Training School in Stonewall. 
Carmen enlisted in the U.S. Navy in Raleigh on June 12, 1946. He took his 
basic training at the U.S. Naval Training Center at Bainbridge, Md. He 
attended the Naval training facility (air intercept) at Jamestown, R.I.  
Other stations included the U.S. Air Station at Quonset Point, R.I., XC 
SPU Cast Naval Air Station, Squanton, Mass., Composite Squadron Thirty 
Third and VC-33 Naval Air Station Norfolk, Va. His duty was a cook (TA 
Steward Apprentice). Seaman Daniel Carmen was discharged from the United 
States Navy on Dec. 12, 1949. His military decorations were the World War 
II Victory Medal and the American Defense Medal.  
Daniel Carmen’s family holds a legacy of service to country. His father, 
Alfred Carmen Sr., served in the U.S. Army during World War I. His 
brothers, Melvin Carmen and Alfred Carmen Jr., served in the military in 
World War II.  After his discharge, Carmen lived in the Boston area for 
several years, working as a cook and security guard. He returned to 
Pamlico County in the early 1980s and worked for Hatteras Yachts as a 
laminator and for the Mason Shoe Manufacturing Company. He was a trustee, 
grounds and kitchen manager, a member of the Angelic Male Chorus and a 
member of Green Hill M.B. Church. Carmen married Betsy Greene of the 
Pamlico community in 1992 and lived there until his death on Dec. 22, 2002.
