Obituary of David Glenn Shirk ~ 2008

David Glenn Shirk of Oriental passed away on Friday, November 28, 2008, at 
Craven Regional Medical Center. 
Dave was born December 20, 1952, in Tulsa, Oklahoma. He lived in Medina, 
Ohio, with his family most of his pre-college years. He graduated from 
Purdue University with a master's degree in electrical engineering. While 
in college, he established his computer software company, Technical 
Systems Consultants, Inc. (TSC), located in West Lafayette, Ind., and 
relocated the business to Research Triangle Park in 1980. 
He married Marsha Helmke and moved to Oriental in 1989 and retired from 
his business.  
Dave loved the water and this area of the coast. He was a sailor and 
traveled the Neuse River and Intracoastal Water Way often on his sailboat, 
Misbehavin.  
He and Marsha opened and operated M&M's Restaurant in Oriental from 1994 
to 2005, known as a favorite eating spot for locals and sailors traveling 
the Intracoastal Water Way.  
In 2006, he established a recording studio and concert promotions business 
called Pamlico Sounds, which brought in several famous artists to perform 
in the Old Theater in Oriental, including George Winston, Leon Redbone, 
Roger Mcquin from the Bryds, Livingstone Taylor and Loudon Wainwright III.
He was an avid amateur radio operator since the age of 12, K14KQ, and 
recently upgraded his license to the highest level, Extra and changed his 
call sign to AA4OK.  
He was preceded in death by his father, Guy Shirk. 
He is survived by his wife, Marsha; stepdaughters, Andrea Bruce of 
Washington, D.C., and Rebecca Rice and husband, Timmy; grandchildren, 
Brittany and Tobey Rice of Alliance; his mother, Alva Shirk of Medina, 
Ohio; and brother, Guy Shirk Jr. of Medina, Ohio.  
A memorial service is planned for 2 p.m. Saturday, December 6, at Bryant 
Funeral Home Chapel, Alliance, with the Rev. Stan Brown officiating.  
The family will receive friends at the home following the service, 303 
Main Street, Oriental, N.C. 28571.
