ORIENTAL - Douglas William Johnston died unexpectedly April 4, 2007, at 
Craven Regional Medical Center. 
He was born in Watervliet, N.Y., on January 17, 1925. 
He grew up in Springfield, Massachusetts, the loving brother of Dorothy 
and devoted son of William and Gladys and later Wilda.  
He flew 15 missions in World War II as a ball turret gunner in the B-24 
Liberator and received the Purple Heart. He raced cars professionally, 
canoed and sailed. He was employed by Hamilton Standard and Combustion 
Engineering.  Doug was a proud Scot and former member of the Melha Shrine 
Temple in Massachusetts.  He lived in Suffield, Connecticut, for many 
years and retired in Oriental. He was a member and trustee of Oriental 
United Methodist Church.  
A memorial service will be held at Oriental United Methodist Church, 
Saturday, April 7, at 3 p.m. with the Rev. Walter Graves officiating.  
He was predeceased by his sister, Dodie, and her three children. He was 
married for 58 years to Jean Nicholson Johnston and was a wonderful dad 
to Lynn, Beth and Laurie. He has seven grandchildren, John Patrick Curran, 
John Joseph Caracoglia, Matthew Douglas Caracoglia, Leah Johnston Tracosa, 
Jackie Lynn Caracoglia, Willa Jon Tracosas and Douglas William Walton; and 
one great-grandson, Dylan Caracoglia.
