YORK - Essie Lenore Benjamin, 82, departed this world Wednesday, August 2, 
2006. She was the wife of David Benjamin. She was born in Bayboro, N.C., 
in the year of our Lord, December 21, 1923. She was the daughter of the 
late Samuel and Senia Lewis. At the age of three she was brought to New 
York along with her sisters and brothers, The family resided in the Bronx 
where she was raised and acquired most of her education, which included her
graduation from Senior College. As a young woman, she met and later married
David. Out of this union, four children were born, Ronald, David, Dianne, 
and Charles Benjamin. Always one to be involved in the God's work, she 
attended several churches and joined them in order to make sure her 
children came up in life knowing God's word. She became the secretary of 
the Church of the Peacemaker under the auspices of Pastor Augustus Smith, 
PhD, from whom she learned a lot, including studying for the ministry. 
After moving to York in 1973, she became an active member of Mt. Calvary 
Baptist Church. She leaves behind one son, Charles Benjamin; 25 beautiful 
grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; 
and a host of nephews, nieces, and friends who loved her dearly and will 
surely miss her. Viewings will be held Friday from 7 to 9 p.m. at Boulding 
Mortuary, Inc., 50 W. Boundary Ave., York, and Saturday from 9 to 9:30 a.m.
at Mt. Calvary Baptist Church, 367 Simpson St., York. The service will 
begin at 9:30 a.m. Saturday at the church with Thaddeus Godwin, pastor Mt. 
Calvary Baptist Church, officiating. Burial will be in Prospect Hill 
Cemetery.
