Evelyn Norcom Pfeifer, 92, of Morehead City, formerly of Oriental, passed
away on Sunday, May 30, 2010, at CarolinaEast Medical Center after a short
illness.
Evelyn Pfeifer, the daughter of George Dill Norcom and Bessie Brooks
Norcom, grew up on Craven Street in Beaufort, NC. The Norcoms have lived
in Beaufort since the middle of the 17th Century. The 2-story West Indies
style home has since been moved over to the west end of Ann Street. It is
still fondly known as the Norcom House.
Evelyn met and married Charles (Charlie) Robert Allaire while he was
serving in the Coast Guard in
Morehead City. Shortly after his military service ended, they moved to his
hometown, Red Bank, NJ. Charlie renewed his membership at the Monmouth Boat
Club and Evelyn started the first Women’s Auxiliary there. They were avid
one-design sailors. After raising their family, they bought a Columbia 38
and began cruising in the early 1970’s. In 1975, they purchased a home in
Oriental, NC. They continued their racing and cruising at the Oriental
Yacht Club. That first home is now M & M’s Café. Ev quickly endeared
herself to village residents and her front yard was a frequent stopover
for many locals on a warm summer day. You could always count on a cool
glass of iced tea, whether Ev was there or not. She would often come home
to an empty pitcher of iced tea in the fridge in exchange for a dozen or
more soft shelled crabs in the freezer. Charlie passed away in 1977. At
that time, there wasn’t an Episcopal minister in Oriental, so Ev persuaded
one to come in from out of town. It was the first Episcopal service in the
village. Ev became one of the founding members of Saint Thomas Episcopal
Church, and she remained an active member of the congregation until she
was no longer able to attend services.
Evelyn had been a widow for 15 years when she met and married Herman
Pfeifer in Oriental. Theirs was a sweet marriage that lasted seven years.
Both were active members in the church, tireless bridge players, and much
loved in the community.
Her funeral will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, June 12, 2010, at St.
Paul’s Episcopal Church with the pastor, the Rev. John Carlisto,
officiating and the Rev. Jeremiah Day, pastor of St. Thomas Episcopal
Church, assisting. The committal service will follow at St. Paul’s
Cemetery.
Evelyn is survived by daughters Carol Seitz and husband, Robert, of
Beaufort, Jane Tindall of Oriental; sisters Florence Anderson of Morehead
City, Joyce Tolson of Morehead City, Jean Bigalow of Erie, PA, Ann Smith
of Salter Path and Ellen Smith of Atlantic Beach; four grandchildren,
Kimberly Mullens, Robert Francis Seitz, Carrie Bergstrom and Peggy Sloan
and ten great-grandchildren. In addition to her parents, her husbands,
Charles Allaire and Herman Pfeifer, and her grandson, Michael Thomas Seitz,
preceded her in death.
The family will receive friends at the home following the service.
Arrangements are by Brooks Funeral Home & Crematory, Inc., Morehead City,
North Carolina.
