Flora Angus Paleen, of Mildred Street in Oriental, N.C., passed away on
Tuesday, February 6, 2006.
Flora was born 83 years ago in the city of Glasgow, Scotland, the youngest
child of Alexander and Margaret (Corbett) Angus. At the tender age of 3
months, Flora and her entire family, including her three brothers and two
sisters, undertook the six-week boat trip halfway around the world to
Sydney, Australia. Flora spent many happy years there surrounded by her
loving family with much music, dancing and fun.
In 1944, she met her late husband, Walter F. Paleen, a naval serviceman
stationed in Australia during World War II. They were married in August of
that year. After Walter returned to the United States, Flora, with infant
William in arms, boarded a troop ship with other war brides and headed for
the U.S. After weeks at sea, the ship docked in San Francisco, where she
and her son boarded a train and traveled thousands of miles to Milwaukee,
Wisconsin, where she and Walter were reunited. Flora and Walt remained
devoted to each other for over 61 years.
Having lived in Oriental since 1980, Flora was widely known as one of the
most gracious hostesses around. Any time you were invited to her home for
dinner or a party you knew you were in for a treat. Nothing gave her more
pleasure than sharing her life with her many friends, keeping in touch
with her relatives in Australia, traveling with her husband and spending
time with her vast American family of in-laws, nieces and nephews, whom
she deeply loved. As an amazingly excellent cook, her crab cakes, stuffed
flounder, stroganoff and many other great dishes will be missed. A
beautiful human being with an easy smile and kind words for everyone,
Flora was truly someone you wanted to know. She made everyone around her
better. She is survived by her son, William (Donna) Paleen of Hilton Head,
S.C., and many Australian nieces and nephews.
A memorial service to honor Flora’s life will be held at 10 a.m. on
Saturday, February 11, at Bryant Funeral Home, Alliance.
