Florence Elizabeth “Betty” Croasmun Brandon, 88, of Whittaker Creek Road,
Oriental, passed away Saturday, March 6.
She was the wife of Kenneth Brandon. Betty was born July 12, 1921, in Kane,
Pennsylvania to Dale and Seeley Croasmun. She grew up in Redclyff, PA, and
attended primary school in a one-room schoolhouse. During WWII, Betty was
one of the first women to serve in the US Marine Corps, where she worked as
a quartermaster with the Corps in San Francisco and left with the rank of
Corporal. After the war, Betty graduated Allegheny College with a degree
in English Literature and was later employed as an executive secretary at
the University of Pittsburgh, UCLA, TRW and the University of Rochester.
In 1957 she took part in Operation Plumbbob nuclear testing at the Nevada
Test Site in Mercury, Nevada.
Betty and Ken Brandon married on July 12, 1962 in Westwood, California.
They lived in Los Angeles, Rochester, NY and Marion, Indiana before moving
to Oriental in 1994. Betty volunteered for a number of years with the Meals
On Wheels program in Pamlico County. She is remembered too, for her daily
drives through Oriental to keep tabs on the village, her workouts at the
gym and her visits to The Bean for decaf iced-coffee and a seat on the
porch. Long after her college years, Betty continued to read books of
history. She combined a sweet demeanor with a keen wry wit, all of which
will be missed.
In addition to her husband of 47 years, Ken, Betty Brandon is survived by
her brother Dale Croasmun of Bedford, PA and sister-in-law Glennie Croasmun
of Marienville, PA and many nieces and nephews.
She is pre-deceased by two brothers, William and Nathan Croasmun of
Pennsylvania. In Oriental, Betty leaves a host of friends.
Bryant Funeral Home is handling the arrangements.
A memorial service is being planned for Saturday March 13 at 11 a.m. at
Bryant Funeral Home.
