Obituary of George Bogan Lee ~ 2006

ORIENTAL - George Bogan "Red" Lee, died February 6, 2006 at the age of 87 
at his home.  
"Red" was born September 11, 1918 in Rockingham, NC and came to Craven 
County with his uncle around 1942 to help with the construction of the 
barracks at Cherry Point with the W.P.A. It was there, in 1943, he met and 
married Sophie Elizabeth Hodges. They worked at a small grill in New Bern 
until the war was over. In 1945, they moved to his wife's hometown of 
Oriental where they built a service station, grill, and home. There they 
worked side-by-side at their business and raised their two daughters, 
Georgie and Rose, until Sophie's death in 1986. "Red" continued their 
business and was best known for their 25-cent hamburgers and hot dogs. 
Many generations of families enjoyed "Red's" humor and wit, as well as the 
hamburgers and hotdogs. After 53 years in business, at the same location, 
in September of 1998, "Red" retired at the age of 80, because of a 
crippling back condition. He spent the remainder of his life at home in
Oriental.  
He is survived by his two daughters and sons-in-law, Georgie and Bennie 
Powell, of Oriental, and Rose Ann and Ravon Broughton of Panama City, FL. 
He is also survived by his four grandchildren, Lynn Broughton, Leanne 
Cogburn, April Tate, and June Miller; seven great-grandchildren, Steven 
and Kyle Broughton, Erica Bell, Andrew Broughton, Anna Tate, Gavin and 
Dawson Miller; two great-great-grandchildren, L.B. and C.W. Bell, all of 
Panama City, FL; and three nieces and one nephew of Rockingham, NC. "Red" 
also leaves behind his faithful caregiver of six years, Veronica Hollowell 
of Vandemere, NC and many friends and families from Oriental and Pamlico 
County.  
A tribute and celebration of "Red's" life will be held at Bryant Funeral 
Home in Alliance, with Rev. Blaney Rowe officiating on Wednesday, February 
8, at 10:00 a.m. Burial will follow in Oriental Cemetery.  
The family will receive friends for visitation and viewing at Bryant 
Funeral Home on Tuesday, February 7, 2006 from 7:00-8:30 p.m.; and at 
other times, at the home, 803 Broad Street, Oriental.  
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that gifts in his memory be made 
to the "Southwest Pamlico First Responders", c/o Joe Wakefield, 403 F
actory St., Oriental, NC 28571; or the "Dottie Gray Ambulance Fund", P.O. 
Box 13276, New Bern, NC 28561.  
Arrangements will be by Bryant Funeral Home, Alliance, NC.
