VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – Gernie T. Spain, 90, passed away peacefully Dec. 2, 
2007, at a local hospital. Born April 7, 1917, to the late Charlie and 
Anne Spain in Hobucken, N.C., he served out country proudly in the U.S. 
Naval Reserves during World War II and the Korean War, retiring as a 
master chief. He was a longtime member of Riverside Baptist Church. Mr. 
Spain will always be remembered as a loving father, brother, grandfather, 
great-grandfather and friend. He will be deeply missed.
Left to cherish his memory is his daughter, Cheryl Mister and husband 
David; a grandson, Jason Mister and wife Kym; a granddaughter, Michelle 
Dennis and husband Jeremy; four great-grandchildren; four sisters; and one 
brother. He was preceded in death by his first wife of 48 years, Vera 
Spain, second wife of 14 years, Grace, and both parents.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 4, 2007, at 
Smith and Williams Funeral Home, Kempsville Chapel. A celebration of life 
will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 5, 2007, at the funeral home with 
burial to follow at Forest Lawn Cemetery. Please share your love and
