ORIENTAL - Gladys Martin Schmidt died Palm Sunday, April 1, 2007.
She was born April 27, 1905 in Kemp, Ill., but spent most of her adult
years in Richmond, Va.
She was known to all as “Marti,” an affectionate nickname given by her
husband, Alfred Schmidt, who died in 1960.
Marti retired in 1967 and has resided since with her daughter, Marlene,
and son-in-law Cecil R. Sykes.
She enjoyed living with them in Thailand, Canada, California, Belgium,
Virginia and North Carolina. Marti loved to travel and made many
excursions from the locations where the family was posted.
She was an avid gardener, accomplished at needlework and expert in the
craft of decoupage. Marti reluctantly gave up her auto in her early 90’s.
She was a lifelong Lutheran but attended St. Thomas Episcopal Church
during her years in Oriental.
Marti is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Marlene and Cecil Sykes;
sons, Gerald Schmidt and James Schmidt of Richmond, Va.; four
grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren; and five great-great-
grandchildren.
A memorial service will be conducted at St. Thomas Episcopal Church,
Oriental at 2 p.m. Wednesday, April 4. Interment will be in Forrest Lawn
Cemetery, Richmond, Va.
