Obituary of Hol Clinton Cayton ~ 2004

SALISBURY - Hol Clinton Cayton, 87, of Salisbury passed away on Tuesday,
Jan. 20, 2004, at his home.
Born in Grantsboro, N.C., he was the son of the late Isaac Duff and Ella
Tingle Caton. He was preceded in death by his wife, Evelyn L. Cayton.
Mr. Cayton was a member of Wicomico Presbyterian Church, the Veterans of
Foreign Wars and the Fleet Reserve Association. He began his Naval career
in 1935 and served aboard a number of ships, including the hospital ship
USS Relief, the battleship USS Maryland and numerous amphibious ships,
including the USS Spiegel Grove. He participated in the Bikini atomic bomb
tests and in many of our major military campaigns in the Pacific Ocean
during World War II, including the occupation of Japan. He retired as a
chief warrant officer (CWO-4) in 1965 after 30 years of continuous service.
Mr. Cayton had a great love for fishing, gardening and reading. He will
always be remembered as a devoted and loving father and husband whose
concern for others showed no bounds. He will be missed for the joy he
brought to the lives of his family members.
He is survived by a daughter, Suzanne Berns of Salisbury; a son, Dennis C.
Cayton of Norfolk, Va.; three grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held Monday at 10 a.m. at Maryland Veterans
Cemetery near Hurlock. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to
Coastal Hospice, PO Box 1733, Salisbury, Md. 21802.
Arrangements are being handled by Holloway Funeral Home, 501 Snow Hill
Road, in Salisbury.
