Obituary of Hubert Hearn Smith ~ 2007

Mr. Hubert Hearn Smith, 86, born June 21, 1921, in Oriental, died Tuesday 
evening at home after a long battle with cancer. 
Mr. Smith is survived by his wife, Norma Spruill Smith; a son, James A. 
Smith of Clayton; a brother, Thomas W. Smith of Oriental; and several 
nieces and nephews. 
Mr. Smith was predeceased by his parents, Mr. William John Smith Jr. and 
Mrs. Olive Hearn Smith, and a son, Hubert Hearn Smith Jr.  
Mr. Smith was a member of Oriental Rotary Club for over 50 years and a 
deacon in the First Baptist Church for 13 years and church treasurer for 
over 25 years. During World War II, Mr. Smith was a navigator with a B-17 
bomber crew and flew 50 missions over Germany. After the war, he returned 
to Oriental to work with his father and brother, at W.J. Smith and Sons. 
He was also postmaster in Oriental for several years prior to his 
retirement in 1985.  
The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Oriental First Baptist Church with 
the Rev. Jack Bowen and the Rev. Murray Ethridge officiating. Burial will 
be in Oriental Cemetery with military honors by Pamlico County Honor Guard. 
The family will receive friends at Bryant Funeral Home from 7 to 9 p.m. 
Thursday and other times at his residence, 304 Broad Street, Oriental.
