Obituary of Ira Lee Whorton ~ 2010

BAYBORO - Ira "Lee" Whorton, 84, of Bayboro and formerly of Florence, died 
Wednesday, March 10, 2010, at The Courtyards at Berne Village. 
 He was a World War II veteran, then a graduate of the University of North 
Carolina at Chapel Hill. He was employed by the U.S. Department of 
Agriculture for 36 years as the Pamlico County Agriculture, Soil and 
Conservation agent. 
He was also mayor of the Town of Bayboro from 1970-1991. 
He coached Little League baseball and football and was an announcer for 
the Pamlico County High School football games for 20 years. 
He was a member of Concord Christian Church.  
He is survived by two sons, Paul Whorton and wife, Belinda D., of New 
Bern, and Robert L. and wife, Kelly Marie, of Seattle, Wash.; and two 
grandchildren, John Slade Whorton and Shannon Cara Whorton.  
A funeral service will be held at 4 p.m. Sunday, March 14, at Bryant 
Funeral Home Chapel, with the Rev. Mike Roach officiating. Burial with 
military rites will follow in Concord Memorial Gardens.  
The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the 
funeral home.
