Obituary of Irdell Rice ~ 2010

YORK, S.C. - Irdell Rice, 85, passed away July 16, 2010, at Morningside 
Assisted Living. 
He was a native of Pamlico County and the son of the late Charles Thaddeus 
and Matilda Kendrick Rice. Mr. Rice was a member of Calvary Baptist Church,
Gastonia, for 59 years and was a 32nd Degree Mason. He retired from Wix 
Filters after 41 years of service and was an Army Air Force Veteran. He 
loved life and enjoyed being a practical joker, and was a very generous 
and loving husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather. He was very 
well respected in his community. A memorial service will be held at noon 
on Monday, July 19, 2010, at Calvary Baptist Church with the Rev. Brian 
Detrick officiating.
Following the service there will be a Celebration of Life Reception in the 
church fellowship hall.
In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by seven brothers and 
sisters. Mr. Rice is survived by his wife of 59 years, Gerri Cannon Rice; 
daughters, Rita Rice Ledford and special life partner, Ada Vallecorsa, of 
Greensboro, and Kelly Jane Walter and husband, Ken, of Fort Mill, S.C.; 
sister, Doris Sutton of New Bern; grandchildren, Tanya Cook and husband, 
Bennett, of Lubbock, Texas, Holly Metzig and husband, Mike, of Ropesville, 
Texas; great-grandchildren, Kelsey Cook, and Madison and Megan Metzig and 
many other family and friends. 
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Calvary Baptist Church, 3001 
S. York Road, Gastonia, NC 28052 or Gaston Hospice, PO Box 3984, Gastonia, 
NC 28054. The family wants to give a special thank you to the staff of 
Morningside Assisted Living.
