CAPTAIN COLLAPSES ABOARD THE "META ROSE" - On Monday morning, July 22,
Chief Daniel Lamont of Coast Guard Station Hobucken, received a call at
8:13 a.m. from a crew-member aboard the "Metta Rosa", stating that Captain
Jimmy Swindell, Jr. of Hobucken had collapsed aboard the 59-foot fishing
vessel.
The "Metta Rosa" was in the Pamlico Sound just outside Jones Bay near the
bombing range.
According to Chief Lamont, a Coast Guard boat was, at the time of the
call, just entering Jones Bay from the Hobucken Canal on a routine patrol
and was immediately diverted to go straight to the "Metta Rosa," arriving
on the scene at 8:29 a.m.
Pedro, rescue helicopter from Cherry Point, was also dispatched and
arrived shortly before the Coast Guard.
"While Pedro was getting the basket ready to air-lift Swindell, the Coast
Guard administered CPR," Chief Lamont stated, "but there were no vital
signs or pulse.
At approximately 8:35 a.m., he was lifted aboard Pedro and taken to
Carteret General Hospital.
Chief Lamont stated that Swindell's death may have been caused by a heart
attack but no confirmation was available at press time.
