Surrounded by family and friends on Thursday, December 1, 2011, John
Williamson Bond crossed over peacefully to be with the Lord at his
residence in Oriental, North Carolina. Born in Indian Woods, North
Carolina on November 17, 1922, John was raised by Steve and Nellie Askew
and spent his early life on his farm in Bertie County on the Albemarle
Sound and his teenage years in Oriental. Shortly after graduating from
High School, John enlisted in the U.S. Navy serving on the USS Jenkins
during World War II. While waiting for the Jenkins to go through repairs
from hitting a mine, John came back to the States and to Oriental to marry
the love of his life, Fay Midyette, and they were married on July 14, 1945.
John and Fay spent the next 23 years farming and raising their three
children and a niece and nephew on the farm in Bertie County. After their
children were grown, John and Fay moved back to Oriental. Over the next 20
years John worked for Texas Gulf, Kress Stores, and Fairfield Harbor in a
variety of positions as well as constructing many homes in and around
Oriental including his own. John was one of Oriental's longest-serving
Rotary members joining the Club in 1969. He was a member of the First
Baptist Church and an icon in the Oriental community. John served as Mayor
of Oriental and as a Pamlico County Commissioner. He had many interests
and hobbies including gardening, boating, and "fixing things".
He is survived by his wife, Fay; children, John "Jack" W. Bond Jr. and
wife, Roxane, of Oriental; George S. Bond and wife, Sandra, of Inman, S.C.,
Irma Fay Maxbauer and husband, Bob of Oriental; eleven grandchildren,
Jessica, Zachary, Christy, Courtney, Manly, Lynn, Janet, Linson, Kitty,
Dody, Mandy; and twelve great-grandchildren, Julious, Connie, Gloria,
Skylar, Ella, Michael, Mandy, Xander, Hailey, Reagan, Joseph, Ryann;
numerous nieces and nephews and in-laws; a half-brother, Earl Daugherty,
and his special beloved companion, "Goldie", the family dog.
He is predeceased by his parents, Mr. and Ms. Steve Askew, his brothers,
James, Lee, Edward, and sister Winifred, and two half-sisters and a
half- brother.
Visitation with the family will be held at Bryant Funeral Home on Saturday,
December 3, 2011, from 4 to 6 p.m.
Services will be held on Sunday, December 4, 2011, at the Oriental First
Baptist Church at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Jerry Harper officiating. Interment
will follow immediately in Oriental cemetery with military rites.
Immediately following the service the family will receive friends at the
Oriental Women's club to honor and celebrate John's life.
