Obituary of John Wesley Herrick ~ 2003

MINNESOTT BEACH, NC - John W. Herrick, 71, of Minnesott Beach entered into 
rest March 11, 2003 at Craven Regional Medical Center. 
Born in Norway, Maine, son of the late Arthur A. and Minnie (Upton) 
Herrick. After high school, he served a four-year enlistment with the US 
Navy "Seabees." He graduated from the University of Maine with a BS in 
Civil Engineering. John then spent 30 years with the US Forest Service as 
a Facilities Engineer. 
After retirement he and his wife of 49 years, Mary Jane (Knightly) Herrick 
spent eight years living aboard their sailboat "FIA," mostly in the 
Caribbean. 
In 1994, they moved ashore in Minnesott Beach, NC where they continued to 
enjoy the out-of-doors. John was active in the US Coast Guard Auxiliary 
for over 25 years. He was also a member of the Independent Order of Odd 
Fellows and a commissioner of Minnesott Beach.  
Memorial services were held Sunday, March 16 at 2:00 pm at Arapahoe United 
Methodist Church in Arapahoe with the Reverend Penny Dollar Farmer 
officiating. The family received friends following the service at the 
fellowship hall. 
He is survived by wife, Mary J. Knightly Herrick of the home; one daughter,
Beth A. Levine and husband, David, of Narbreth, PA; one son, Scott A. 
Herrick of NJ; four grandchildren, Paul Smith and wife, Courtney, Jeffrey 
Smith, Ashley Smith and Dara Levine; two great-grandchildren, Andrew Smith 
and Emily Smith.
