Obituary of Johnie Armstead Wilkinson Jr ~ 2011

GRANTSBORO - Johnie Armstead Wilkinson Jr. went to be with his Lord and 
Savior Sunday, Sept. 25, 2011 at the age of 71.  
Born in New Bern, Johnie was the son of Mattie Pearl and the late Johnie 
Armstead Wilkinson Sr. of Pamlico County. 
After graduating from Broughton High School of Raleigh, he went on to study
at the Naval Academy at Annapolis.  
Johnie was a highly decorated Vietnam War hero and an outstanding officer 
and pilot. Nicknamed "The Hawk," he was awarded 2 Distinguished Flying 
Crosses, The Bronze Star and Purple Hearts for his exemplary bravery. 
He was awarded 27 Air Medals, 2 with Valor for his heroism during his 
2 tours of duty in Vietnam, along with many other medals.  
As a National Cribbage Open Champion, he will be fondly remembered by his 
passion for golf, his love of a good joke and the kindness in his heart.  
He is survived by his mother, Mattie Pearl Williamson; his siblings, Don 
Wilkinson, Sue Wilkinson Thompson, LaVon Wilkinson; his children, Johnie 
Armstead Wilkinson III and wife Kerry, Christopher Paul Wilkinson and wife 
Kimberly, Ryan David Wilkinson, Kelli Diane Wilkinson and the mother of
his children Patricia Ann Wilkinson. 
His grandchildren, Ryan Xiomar, Tucker Dean, Josephene Mae, Lila Jolene, 
Cullen Gabriel, Emmelene Jade and Gunnar Rhene; and by his cousins, nieces 
and nephews that loved their Uncle Buddy.  
A visitation will be held at Bryant Funeral Home & Crematory, in Alliance, 
on Friday, Sept. 30, 2011 at 1 p.m., with a memorial service to follow at 
2 p.m.
