Obituary of Joyce Shaffer Hurst ~ 2007

ORIENTAL - Joyce Shaffer Hurst, 84, of Oriental, died Saturday, October 6, 
2007, at Craven Regional Medical Center.  
Joyce was born June 23, 1924, in Portland, Ore. 
Her parents were the late Albert and Beatrice Shaffer of Tacoma, Wash.  
She was predeceased by her husband, Charles E. Hurst, in 1988, and her 
brother, Robert Shaffer, of Gig Harbor, Wash.  
She is survived by three daughters and three sons, Dr. Charlene Callahan 
of Sarasota, Fla., Daniel and Rosemary Callahan of Plymouth, Mich., Denise
Hurst of Florence, S.C., Dennis Hurst of Oriental, Douglas and Gaye Hurst 
of Jacksonville, Fla., and Debbie Hurst of Oriental. 
She is also survived by her sister, Margie Strait and her husband, Jim, of 
Sun City, Ariz.; two grandchildren, Kevin Callahan of Lizonia, Mich., and 
Colleen O’Toole of Redford, Mich.; and one great-grandchild, Brendan 
Callahan of Lizonia, Mich.  
A private graveside service will be held Wednesday at the Veteran’s 
National Cemetery in New Bern.  
The family will receive friends and neighbors from 2 to 5 p.m. on Wednesday, 
October 10, 2007, at the home of Debbie Hurst, 106 Norman Circle, Oriental.
