Lena Kirkman Allen, 71, of 2002 Chestnut Ave. died Friday, May 16, 2008, 
at Two Rivers Healthcare-Trent Campus.  She was a native of Pamlico County 
and was a New Bern resident for over 50 years. She attended Craven 
Community College and Shaw University. She was employed with Head Start 
for 32 years and received the Director's Award in 1996.  The funeral 
service will be held 11 a.m. Thursday, May 22, 2008, at Star of Zion 
Missionary Baptist Church, 702 Miller St., with the Rev. Kareem Buck 
officiating. The interment will be in New Bern Memorial Cemetery.  She is 
survived by her husband, Winfred Walter Allen Sr. of the home; three 
daughters, Franchena McFadyen of New Bern, Sandra Hickman of Greenville, 
and Jennifer Phillips of Raleigh; one son, Winfred Walter Allen Jr. of 
Maury; four brothers, Shelton Kirkman Jr. of Wilson, Andrew Kirkman of 
Badin, Clifton Kirkman of New Bern and Jerome Kirkman of Deland, Fla.; 
four sisters, Gerturde Hester, Lois Jamison, Dorothy Adams, all of New 
Bern, and Jeannie Edwards of Hampton, Va.; 23 grandchildren; and 36 
great-grandchildren.  The family will receive friends at the residence. 
Viewing will be from noon to 6:30 p.m. Wednesday at Oscar's Mortuary and 
an hour prior to the service at the church. Arrangements by Oscar's Mortuary.
