CHESAPEAKE - Maretta Florence Carawan Miller, 96, of the 1300 block of 
Savory Crescent, went to be with the Lord March 30, 2006, in Norfolk. 
A native of Lowland, N.C., she was the daughter of the late George W. and 
Mary Swain Carawan and the wife of the late Curtis Hugh Miller. 
A graduate of Great Bridge High School, she was the valedictorian of her 
class and recipient of the Good Citizenship Medal. She was a salesperson 
at Ann's Hallmark in Great Bridge for 20 years until she was 88 years old. 
She was also the oldest living member of her beloved Oaklette United 
Methodist Church, where she was active in the Ruckman Sunday school class 
and the Methodist Women. Mrs. Miller volunteered by knitting infant caps 
for Chesapeake General Hospital and for friends and relatives. One of her 
favorite pastimes was catching fish. 
A beloved mother, grandmother, aunt, and friend, she was kind, strong, and 
gentle and will be missed by all who knew her.  
She is survived by a daughter, Constance A. Tucker and her husband Richard 
of Chesapeake; a son, Leslie Hugh Miller and his wife Ann of Virginia 
Beach; three granddaughters, Teresa Ann Walsh and her husband Matt of 
Chesapeake, Lorri Ann Abdolahzahdeh and her husband Hamid and Joan Suzanne 
Michaud and her husband Dave, all of Virginia Beach; three grandsons, 
Leslie Hugh Miller Jr. of Roanoke, Douglas Wayne Huston and his wife Nancy 
Reed of Virginia Beach and David Miller and his wife Betsy of Roanoke; 16 
great-grandchildren, Hannah, Alex, McCall, Samantha, Reed, Matthew, Anna, 
Sarah, Jack, William, Mia, Les, Brandon, Rachel, Jordan and Drew; and many 
nieces and nephews. 
She was preceded in death by one sister and four brothers.  
A funeral will be held Monday at 11 a.m. in Oaklette United Methodist 
Church with the Rev. Gene Meeks officiating. Burial will be in Riverside 
Memorial Park. The family will receive friends at Graham Funeral Home, 
Greenbrier Chapel, Sunday from 4 to 5:30 p.m. and at the residence at all 
other times.
