Mark Louis Benton, 43, of 243 Heartwood Drive, Raeford, NC died January 7,
2011, at his home. Benton was born on March 28, 1967, in New Bern. He
began school at Arapahoe Elementary. He graduated from New Hanover High
School in Wilmington, NC. Mark was a member of First Christian Church
(Disciples of Christ), Wilmington. He received his civil engineering degree
from N. C. State University. He worked with the U.S. Army Corps of
Engineers for more than 20 years. He attended Perdue University. He worked
with his Civil Engineering skills under a Presidential Order in Miami,
emergency relief after Hurricane Andrew and in Raleigh, with emergency
relief after Hurricane Fran. He helped with the designing of Fairfield
Bridge. He was working for the Corps as a Federal Civil Servant, as Office
Engineer at Fort Bragg, at the time of his death. He is survived by his
wife, Jane Campbell Benton; his mother, Barbara Ann Wilcox Benton of
Arapahoe; his sister, Michelle Benton Delaney of Arapahoe; and his brother,
John Stilley of Bridgeton. Mark was proceeded in death by his father,
Robert E. Benton; Grandparents, Louis Melvin and Elizabeth Banks Wilcox;
Alice G. Banks of Arapahoe and Rufus A. Benton of Wilmington. A memorial
service was held on January 13, 2011, at Wood Memorial Chapel on Fort
Bragg with David Meyer, chaplain, officiating. Memorials may be made to
