GRANTSBORO - Mary Eugenia Gerald Southcomb, 87, of Two Rivers Nursing Home,
New Bern, died Thursday, Dec. 20, 2007.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 64 years, (MGySgt) K.W.
Southcomb, and is survived by her son, the Rev. David Southcomb of
Greenville. Mrs. Southcomb was an only child, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs.
Eugene Gerald of Radford, Va. She attended Radford College (today Radford
University) and Assembly Training School (today, the Presbyterian School
of Christian Education) in Richmond, Va.
Mrs. Southcomb was the wife of a career U.S. Marine and traveled and
worked in California, Illinois, Florida, Tennessee and North Carolina.
She served in various community, church and civic organizations including
president of the Women of the Church and Women's Circle chairperson in
various churches in the Presbyterian Church in the U.S.A. and was a member
of West New Bern Presbyterian Church. She also had been a member of the
Order of the Eastern Star for 59 years, and was a member of Craven Chapter,
Order of the Eastern Star, New Bern.
In the 1950s, she participated in the New Bern Business and Professional
Women's Organization and in more recent times, served as the Heart Fund
chairperson for Pamlico County.
She also worked in a local soup kitchen and a community ministry for needy
and abused persons.
Similarly, in recent years, she had served as a business instructor at
Pamlico Community College in Grantsboro and both she and her husband began
buying a house in Grantsboro in 1967, relocating from the Cherry Point
Marine Corps Air Station.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Thursday at the Pollock Best
Chapel with the Rev. Denver Blevins officiating. Burial will follow at
New Bern Memorial Cemetery. Visitation will be Wednesday evening from 7 to
10 p.m. at Pollock Best Funerals and Cremations.
