Mildred McCotter Lee, 94, of Arapahoe, died on Thursday evening, July 3,
2009, at Brookdale Memory Care Assisted Living in Chapel Hill after a
lengthy illness.
Mildred was a gifted basketball player in high school and enjoyed tennis.
As a young woman, she represented Pamlico County in the Miss North Carolina
pageant. Mildred was a devoted and dutiful wife and mother. She taught her
children the values she believed in and held them accountable for their
choices. After the youngest of her children entered public school, she
fulfilled her wish to work outside the home by accepting a bookkeeping job
that she enjoyed for many years. Through that work, her church, and her
love of golfing, she had many years of pleasurable activities with her
colleagues and friends. She was a meticulous housekeeper, an avid gardener,
and a golfer who brought home many trophies for her team. Mildred was a
longtime member and choir member at Bethany Christian Church in Arapahoe.
She was a woman of strong opinions, and from early childhood until her
death, she interacted with the world in a feisty and energetic way.
She was the daughter of the late John and Flora McCotter of Grantsboro and
the widow of Robert Earl Lee of Arapahoe.
She was preceded in death by her brothers and sister, Clifton McCotter,
Wilma Holton, Perry McCotter, John McCotter Jr., and Burney McCotter.
She is survived by her children, Annette Kahn and spouse, Charles Kahn, of
Chapel Hill, Linda Newton and spouse, Jesse Newton, of New Bern, Shirley
Paul of Knightdale, Rod Lee and spouse, Dr. Sue Lee, of Bayboro, son Jeff
Lee and spouse, Linda Lee, of Marriottsville, Md., and by 11 grandchildren
and 13 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Monday, July 6, 2009, at Bethany
Christian Church in Arapahoe, with the Rev. Merritt Watson officiating.
The family will receive visitors at Bryant Funeral Home in Alliance from 6
