NEW BERN - J. Muse McCotter, 97, was born April 16, 1906 and died January
28, 2004.
He grew up in Cash Corner, North Carolina, a small farming community in
Pamlico County. He attended New Bern High School, the University of North
Carolina, and business school in Baltimore, Md.
Muse spent the majority of his working life in farming growing potatoes
and later raising beef cattle. He later served as Superintendent of the
Craven County ABC Stores.
Muse was a member of both the Shrine Temple in New Bern and the Masonic
Lodge in Bayboro, N.C. for more than 75 years. He served as a member of
the New Bern Board of Education as well as the North Carolina State Board
of Agriculture. He also served a term as President of the North Carolina
Cattlemen's Association. He was a member of Christ Episcopal Church where
he had served on the Vestry as Junior Warden.
Muse was predeceased by his wife of over 71 years, Emma D. "Bay" McCotter.
He is survived by one son, John M. McCotter, Jr. of New Bern; two daughters,
Emma M. Latham of Wilmington, N.C. and Susan M. Fox of Edenton, N.C.
He is also survived by six grandchildren, Emma, Steven, Susan, James, Leah
and Catherine as well as six great- grandchildren.
Muse and his wife Bay were a great team who truly loved life, each other,
and the friendships and adventures it offered. They saw everyday as a gift
not to be wasted, but to be enjoyed with humor and fun. They were a
wonderful example of how to view the time we all have together.
