Obituary of Nita Joannah Carawan Garrett ~ 1999

Mrs. Nita Joannah Carawan Garrett, 101, of 3963 Alamance Church Rd., 
Liberty, died Friday, Dec. 17, 1999, at Britthaven of Guilford in 
Greensboro.  
The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 19, 1999, at Mt. Pleasant 
United Methodist Church, 4400 Alamance Church Rd., with Dr. Charles Adams 
officiating.  Born July 29, 1898, to Jesse Monroe and Mary Celia Carawan 
in Pamlico County. Nita attended Whitsett Institute in Guilford County in 
her teen years, where she met her husband to be, Charles Walter Garrett of 
Liberty. 
Before marriage in 1920, Nita taught school a few years in Eastern North 
Carolina. After marriage, she was a homemaker and loving mother to four 
sons and one daughter.  Nita was a member of Mt. Pleasant United Methodist 
Church, but was originally of the Primitive Baptist faith. 
She was proud of being a dedicated Republican, helping at the voting polls 
for many years and failed to vote in national elections only once after 
women were allowed to vote.  
Nita was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Walter Garrett; son, 
Maurice Carawan Garrett; young son, Fred Elbert (one year); her parents; 
one sister; and five brothers.  
Mrs. Garrett is survived by her daughter, Celia Clapp and husband, Perry of
Liberty; sons, Gene and wife, Lee, Dan and wife, Nancy, and a 
daughter-in-law, Ella, all of Liberty; seven grandchildren; 11 
great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces and nephews.  
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 18, 1999, 
at the Loflin Funeral Home in Liberty and at other times, at the home of 
Gene Garrett, 3064 Hwy. 62 E., Liberty.  
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the charity of 
the donor's choice.
