GREENVILLE - Phoebe Barnes Owens, 90, died Jan. 31, 2003.
Mrs. Owens, daughter of the late Herbert C. and Ella Sawyer Barnes, was
born June 30, 1912, in Pamlico County. She received her A.B. and M.A.
degrees in education from East Carolina University. She was employed with
the public schools for 19 years, teaching English and French at Gatesville
High School, Chowan High School and Sladesville High School and as director
of the Albemarle Regional Library in Winton, N.C., serving the counties of
Bertie, Gates and Hertford. For 17 years, she was employed at East Carolina
University, retiring in 1977 as an assistant professor in Academic Library
Services.
She was initiated in Delta Kappa Gamma, the Pi Chapter, in 1957. Her
membership was transferred to Beta Alpha when she moved to Greenville. In
1978, she participated in the organization of The Friends of the East
Carolina University Library. She held a life membership in the Association
of Retired Faculty at ECU. A member of Jarvis Memorial United Methodist
Church since 1960, she had served on the Administrative Board, as chairman
of the Commission on Religion and Race and on the Library Committee. She
was a member of the Lydia Wooten Sunday School Class, the United Methodist
Women Group 9, and the Patient Circle of the King's Daughters and Sons.
Her husband, Prescott Franklin Owens, preceded her in death Dec. 15, 1955.
Surviving are a son, Frank H. Owens of Greenville; and granddaughter,
Caroline Elizabeth Owens of Greenville.
A memorial service will be conducted at 2 p.m. today in the chapel of
Jarvis Memorial United Church. The family will receive friends following
the service. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Jarvis Memorial
United Church, 510 S. Washington St., Greenville, NC 27834. Arrangements
are by Wilkerson Funeral Home and Crematory.
