Dr. Robert Lee Hickok, born June 23, 1929, died after a long illness in
Greenville, North Carolina on July 2, 2010.
Dr. Hickok and his deceased wife Dolores Valene Hickok were residents of
Oriental, North Carolina where Dr. Hickok served several terms as a Town
Councilman after his retirement from General Electric as Laboratory
Director for the Lighting Business Group. Dr. Hickok grew up in Reading,
Michigan where he attended the one-room schoolhouse in Frontier and
graduated from Hillsdale County High School. He graduated with a degree in
chemistry from Antioch College and his doctorate in physical chemistry
from the University of Colorado. Dr. Hickok did original research in the
early nuclear energy at the Idaho National Engineering Laboratory before
joining General Electric at its Nela Park research facility in Cleveland,
Ohio. Though taking great pride in his work as a scientist and in his
inventions, Dr. Hickok’s true passions came out in his life in Oriental
where he was a master gardener, avid sailor, tireless community volunteer,
and companion to his Labrador retriever Megan. Valene Hickok and Megan
were Dr. Hickok’s daily companions for his final difficult journey and
preceded him in death.
Dr. Hickok is survived by his beloved children Kimberley X Hickok, J. Kyle
Hickok, and Michael Robert Hickok. He was blessed with four cherished
grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
The family will hold a private memorial service.
