Obituary of Roy Gray Ewell ~ 1997

Mr. Roy Gray Ewell, 75, died Thursday, November 27, 1997. His residence 
was 1122 Ragsdale Road. 
The funeral service will be conducted Sunday at 2 .m. at St. James United 
Methodist Church.  Burial will be in New Bern Memorial Cemetery. Mr. 
Ewell was the youngest of ten children of the late Roman Victor and Iola 
McCotter Ewell of Bayboro, in Pamlico County. He enlisted in the United 
States Navy in 1940 and served until his retirement.  
During World War II he served in North Africa and later was stationed in 
Norfolk, Virginia, Flint, Michigan, Richmond, Virginia, New Bern, NC and 
Charleston, SC. Following his retirement he moved to Greenville in 1959 
and worked for Voice of America of ten years.
He was a member of St. James United Methodist Church and had served on the 
Official Board. He was also a member of Greenville Masonic Lodge #284 A.F. 
and A.M. He was a member of Mended Hearts and the Stinger Club, whose
members are survivors of the USS WASP.
He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Elizabeth "Betsy'' Ives Ewell; 
daughter and son-in-law, Karen and Michael Arny of Greenville; two 
grandchildren, Christopher and Emma Arny of Greenville; brother-in-law, 
Horace B. Ives of Brevard; and several nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be Saturday from 7-9 p.m. at Wilkerson Funeral Home.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Oxford 
Orphanage, 600 College Street, Oxford, NC 27565 or to St. James United
Methodist Church, Music Fund, 2000 E. 6th St., Greenville, NC 27858.
