HAMPTON - Slater B. Matthews Sr., 83, died from heart-related illnesses on
April 24, 2003.
Mr. Matthews was born in Oriental, N.C., on Sept. 20, 1919. He joined the
United States Army in 1942 and transferred to the United States Air Force
in 1948 serving tours in North Africa, Europe, Asia and Bermuda, as well as
the United States. Mr. Matthews retired after 30 years in 1971 and settled
with his wife Bessie Lois Matthews and family in Hampton, Va. He was a
member of Miracle Temple Baptist Church in Newport News, Va.
Survivors include his sister, Pearl Matthews Jones, 91, of Philadelphia,
Pa.; four daughters and four sons-in-law, Patricia Ann Matthews-Juarez and
Paul D. Juarez of Los Angeles, Calif., Lottie D. Hickman and Alton G.
Hickman Sr. of New Bern, N.C., Linda Matthews King and John D. King of
Silver Spring, Md., Connie Matthews Harshaw and James Michael Harshaw of
Laurel, Md.; five sons and four daughters-in-law, Ervan Harvey (Matthews)
and Earlene Harvey of Hampton, Va., Glyn Matthews and Ethel Matthews of
Dover, Del., Slater B. Matthews Jr. and Gloria Matthews of Hampton, Va.,
Mark J. Matthews of Hampton, Va., and Morris E. Matthews and Amy Matthews
of Hampton, Va.; 36 grandchildren; more than 30 great- and great-great-
grandchildren; and a host of nephews, nieces, cousins and other family
members.
A viewing is scheduled for Thursday, May 1, beginning at 11 a.m. and the
family will receive friends from 6 to 7 p.m. at the Cooke Bros. Funeral
Chapel, 1601-27th St., Newport News, Va. The memorial service will be held
at 11 a.m. on Friday, May 2, at the Miracle Temple Baptist Church,
617-32nd St., Newport News, Va. Interment immediately following at the
Hampton Veteran's Memorial Gardens, Hampton, Va. In lieu of flowers, the
family requests that a tax-deductible contribution in the name of Mr.
Slater B. Matthews Sr. be made to the Tuskegee Airmen National Scholarship
Fund, P.O. Box 78967, Los Angeles, CA 90016.
