Vance Joshua Carawan, 81, of the 1200 block of Mount Pleasant Road died 
Wednesday, Feb. 12, 1997, in a local hospital. 
Born in Lowland, N.C., he was the son of the late George Wallace and Mary 
Arbelle Spain Carawan. He retired from the Chesapeake Sheriff's Department 
after 10 years of service. Mr. Carawan was a member of Mount Pleasant 
United Methodist Church, Great Bridge Masonic Lodge No. 257 and Hickory 
Ruritan Club.
Survivors include his wife, Bernice Gower Carawan; two daughters, Gwendolyn
Sue Yates of Chesapeake and Cheryl Corvello of Newport News; son, Donald 
Eugene Carawan of Chesapeake; sister, Maretta Florence Miller of Chesapeake; 
five grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.  
A graveside service with Masonic rites will be conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday
in Rosewood Memorial Park by the Rev. Ben Hadley Goggin. The honor guard 
will be represented by the sheriff's department.  
The family will receive friends in Oman Funeral Home, Great Bridge, from 7 
to 8 p.m. today. Memorial contributions may be made to the Mount Pleasant 
United Methodist Church, 2504 Bellpage Ave., Chesapeake, Va. 23322.
