Obituary of Velma Paul Phillips ~ 2001

NEW BERN - Velma Paul Phillips, 83, of New Bern died Sunday at Bayview 
Nursing Center.  
She was born near Arapahoe, NC and lived in New Bern all of her adult life.
She attended Atlantic Christian College (now Barton College) in Wilson and 
completed Hardbarger's Business School in Raleigh.  
Velma Phillips lived a life of exceptional beauty and grace. She met life's
challenges with courage, quiet acceptance and common sense. She was 
nurturing, forgiving and always kind. Her lovely presence will be sadly 
missed by those who loved and honored her. She cared deeply about her 
family and treasured her roots in Pamlico County.  
She was predeceased by her husband F. Murray Phillips, Sr.; by her parents 
Leven Zacheus Paul and Lillie Price Paul; by her five sisters Lula Paul 
Reel, Iva Paul Stokes, Della Paul Eason, Eva Paul Stokes and Thelma Paul 
Baldwin; and by her brother Alton Paul.  
She is survived by her daughter Kay Phillips Williams of New Bern and her 
son, F. Murray Phillips, Jr. of Kent Island, Maryland; her granddaughter, 
Elizabeth Phillips Schlipper and grandson-in-law Kevin Schlipper of Austin,
Texas; her grandson, Nathan M. Phillips of Reston, Virginia; her great-
grandson Thomas Schlipper of Austin, Texas and numerous nieces and nephews.  
A celebration of her life will be held at Amity Christian Church near 
Arapahoe, NC at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, March 21, with the Reverend Douglas 
Stokes officiating. The service will be followed by a reception in the 
Church Fellowship Hall. 
Burial will be in New Bern Memorial Cemetery at 3:00 p.m.  
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Tryon Palace Council of 
Friends, P.O. Box 1007, New Bern NC 28563 or to Amity Christian Church.
