Vera Potter Barnes Jones, 102, died peacefully, surrounded by her family, 
at Britthaven of Pamlico on Sunday, February 22, 2009. She was born on 
August 2, 1906, in Lowland and was the daughter of William Lindsey and 
Betty Della Williamson Potter.
She was preceded in death by her husbands, William Andrew Barnes and 
Joshua B. Jones; son, William A. "Bill" Barnes Jr., and son-in-law, Donald 
B. Purser; stepson, Winston Jones; and stepdaughter, Sarah Sanders.
She is survived by two sons, Lendon E. Barnes and wife, Priscilla, of 
Grantsboro and Frankie Barnes and wife, Barbara, of Jacksonville, Fla.; 
daughter, Betty B. Purser of Bayboro; daughter-in-law, Elizabeth K. Barnes 
of Seymour, Tenn.; sister-in-law, Trixie Potter of Alliance; stepson, 
Rudolph Jones of Mesic; stepdaughter, Ola J. Watson of Franklin, Va.; 13 
grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; 10 great-great-grandchildren; 19 
stepgrandchildren; 32 stepgreat-grandchildren; 83 
stepgreat-great-grandchildren; and eight 
stepgreat-great-great-grandchildren.
In early 1960s, she began working in the cafeteria at Fred A. Anderson 
Elementary School and remained there until her retirement. For many years 
after that, she sat with disabled and shut-in patients, which brought her 
much happiness. She loved being with people and friends, but most of all 
she loved spending time with her family.
She was a member of Oriental Free Will Baptist Church and was active in 
the church as long as her health permitted.
Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Tuesday, February 24, at Bryant 
Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Dwayne Boyd officiating. Burial will 
follow in Sandhill Cemetery in Reelsboro. 
The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the 
funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to the 
Activity Department of Britthaven of Pamlico, 290 Keel Road., Grantsboro, 
N.C. 28529, which provided Mom with the activities she enjoyed so much 
with the other residents, or to a charity of your choice.
