Dr. Warren Walter Gulko, 68, died peacefully at his home in Oriental on
Friday, August 5, 2005.
The family will receive friends at the Bryant Funeral Home in Alliance, NC,
Wednesday, August 10, 2005, between 4:30 and 6 p.m.
Warren was born in Cleveland, Ohio, on December 19, 1936, son of the late
Joseph and Fay Gulko.
He served in the U. S. Air Force in Okinawa from 1954-1958, and then worked
in the aerospace industry in California. He held a bachelor's degree with
honors in Economics from San Diego State University, a master's degree in
Management Science and a Ph.D. in Higher Education Administration, both
from the University of Minnesota. Over his long career in higher education and administration, Warren held leadership positions at the University of Colorado, the University of Massachusetts at Amherst, the University of Hawaii at Manoa, Temple University in Philadelphia and served as Vice President of the Philadelphia University of The Arts. An avid sailor, Warren and his wife Susan relocated to Oriental, North Carolina, in 1990, where they ran the Western Auto store in Bayboro for six years. During this time, Warren was active in community and civic affairs in Eastern North Carolina. He was president of the Pamlico County Chamber of Commerce and was the founding chairman of the Pamlico Partnership for Children, Inc. Warren was one of the original organizers of the Oriental Rotary Tarpon Tournament, served on the board of directors of the Oriental Rotary Club and as chairman of the Rotary Scholarship committee. He also served on the civilian advisory committee to the Marine Corps Air Station at Cherry Point, the Neuse River Private Industry Council, board of directors of the
Neuse River Development Authority and was Executive Director of the
Coastal Entrepreneurial Council. In 1993 Governor Jim Hunt honored him
with the Governor's Award for Outstanding Volunteer Service.
In 1994 he established the Small Business Center at Pamlico Community
College, serving as its first Director. The next year he was appointed as
a North Carolina delegate to the National White House Conference on Small
Business. The National Federation of Independent Business (NFIB) honored
him in 1996 as one of the nation's top 100 independent business leaders.
In 1997, he organized and co-chaired North Carolina's first Governor's
Conference on Small Business, which received the national Vision 2000
Model of Excellence award from the Small Business Administration. Warren
served as chairman of North Carolina's Micro-Enterprise Loan Program
Advisory Committee, board member of the North Carolina Delegation for
Small Business, and Executive Director of the Coastal Entrepreneurial
Council.
In his last years, Dr. Gulko was a member of the faculty of the Cameron
School of Business at the University of North Carolina at Wilmington where
he taught statistics and served as an Assistant to the Dean of the Cameron
School of Business.
In addition to his wife Susan, he is survived by his daughter Jami Gulko
of Palo Alto, CA; his sons Daniel Gulko of Marseilles, France, and David
Gulko of Honolulu, Hawaii; his sister Jean Schindler of San Diego, CA, and
his brother Sam Gulko of Rancho Mirage, CA; and his grandson Zaheer Gulko
of Honolulu, Hawaii.
